The Cumberland Library Fund, Inc., was founded in 1994 to help with the capital campaign as the Library worked toward an expansion project that was completed in 2000.  The fund and its governing board is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the primary goal of securing volutnary contributions to help support operational and capital needs of the Cumberland Public Library.  The governing board is composed of seven (7) members, all with an interest in promoting the Library and in looking for possiblities for maintaining and growing the fund's endowment. Monetary contributions are administered by the Cumberland Library Fund for purchase of materials, programs, or equipment not included in the normal operating budget.


Purpose
The purpose of the Cumberland Library Fund is to:
  • Create and maintain an endowment to finance future library needs;
  • Provide the library communitywith a way to support the library with donations, gifts and/or bequests;
  • Oversee professional management of fund assets.;
  • Produce a source of income to supplement the library operating budget.

  • Cash
  • Publicly Traded Securities
  • Life Insurance and Retirement Plan
  • Assets
  • Real Estate
  • Tangible Personal Property: In general, donors who wish to make gifts of books, artwork, furniture or other tangible personal property should be directed to the Library Director and the Library Board of Trustees, unless the donor directs that the item(s) are to be sold and the proceeds added to the Cumberland Library Fund endowment.
Deferred Gift Acceptance Guidelines
Gifts by Will or Trust: Bequests received will be applied for the charitable purpose requested by the donor, as long as those purposes are reasonable, practical and with the mission of the Cumberland Library Fund. Unrestricted bequests shall be added to the fund endowment.

Donors who wish to create other deferred gift vehicles, such as charitable gift annuities or charitable remainder trusts shall be directed to the Rhode Island Foundation for counsel.

Acknowledgement and Recognition
All gifts shall be acknowledged with a personal note from the Cumberland Library Fund Board of Directors and gifts of $250 or more will receive a letter with the necessary verbiage for donor’s tax purposes.

Giving TreeWithin the library's main lobby, there is a Giving Tree on which  the Fund recognizes all major donors to the Cumberland Library Fund.  Each donation is represented by a bronze plaque mounted on the tree display with the following levels:
  • Bronze Leaf: $200-499, plus the cost of engraving
  • Silver Leaf: $500-2,499
  • Gold Leaf: $2,500-14,999
  • Small Stone: $15,000-99,999
  • Large Stone: $100,000 or more

Confidentiality
All agreements and all information concerning donors and prospective donors shall be held in strict confidence by the CLF, subject to legally authorized and enforceable requests for information by governing agencies and courts.
All other requests for donor information will be honored or allowed only if the donor grants permission, in writing, before the release of such information.
