The Engineering Department provides engineering administrative and field support to all Town departments. It is responsible for preparing plans, specifications and bid documents for roadway pavement rehabilitation, drainage, and other public works projects.  It is also responsible for reviewing plans and specifications of residential subdivisions and commercial land development for compliance with Town regulations and engineering standards. Inspections and construction management of these Town projects are also conducted by the Engineering Department.  Administrative duties include the review and processing of all street opening, utility and curb cut permit applications.

The Finance Department is responsible for all financial and accounting functions for the town. This includes all forms of tax billings and collections from the taxpayers and citizens of the Town as well as managing all cash management functions from the Town. Cash management includes handling cash receipts and disbursements in compliance with Federal and State regulations, payroll processing and reporting, purchasing, grant compliance, and budget preparation.  The Finance Department also serves as the central administrator for such functions as bid openings and bonding information. The Highway Department services the Town's streets, highways, sidewalks, bridges, watercourses, and storm drains. This department also performs construction, maintenance, repair operations associated with the grounds for our public buildings, and for all parks and recreational facilities.  It maintains over 200 miles of roads within town, including street sweeping, snow  plowing, tree trimming, brush cutting, catch basin cleaning, and other tasks that require heavy and light highway maintenance or construction equipment.  The department also maintains all Town vehicles, and manages the community recycling waste drop-off containers and operations at the Kent Street Garage facility.

The Public Works Sewer Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of sanitary sewers and wastewater collection and pumping facilities within the Town of Cumberland.  There are approximately 70 miles of gravity sewers which connect to Narragansett Bay Commission’s interceptor sewers that convey our wastewater through Cumberland to the other southerly systems leading to Bucklin Point facility in East Providence, RI.  The Sewer Department operates and maintains four separate wastewater pumping stations, which are located on Abbott Street, Broadview Avenue, Curran Road, and on Highland Corporate Drive.  There are approximately 10,000 town residents and 250 commercial and industrial customers who are connected to the town sewer system.  The Sewer Department also administers all permitting associated with sanitary sewer connections, and processes all sewer assessment and sewer usage bills.

Our Trash & Recycling department educates residents regarding our curbside trash, recycling and special collections offered our community and assist residents with resources for disposal of items that go beyond these programs.
