Chicken Soup For the Preteen Soul

As all the other Chicken Soup books, this book is filled with stories that make you feel good, like chicken soup when you have a cold. I recommend this book to anybody, even though it says it is for preteens. This book would make anybody feel a warmth that you couldn’t feel if you were spending summer in a stuffy building with no air-conditioning. I loved it.

The Secret Life Of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

Lily and her black maid, Rosaleen run away from their home when they are arrested for assaulting some white men and Lily’s father tells her that her mother abandoned them. They run away and meet the Boatwright sisters who take them in. The sisters have a bee farm where they make honey. Living with them was the best times for Lily; she finally had mother figures in her life. Her dad finds her and wants her to go home but then through confrontation he realizes that she is best where she is now and agrees to let her stay with the Boatwright sisters. This was a touching story. I loved the Boatwright sisters. They each had their own personalities and they got along so well with each other that the definition of home was clearly shown. This is a classic book that every person should read.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine

Princess Meryl and Princess Addie are sisters. Addie is shy while Meryl is outgoing and brave. When Meryl catches the Gray Death, Addie must go on a dangerous journey to find the cure for her sister. On this journey, she conquers fears, fights battles, and learns to be brave. This is one of my favorite fantasy stories. I’ve read it many times. The action in this book is thrilling and the bond between the sisters are touching. It’s a great read!

Happyface by Stephen Emond

The main character never reveals his name. He is referred to as Happyface in the story. Happyface really liked this one girl, Chloe but was afraid to tell her. Then one day he found out that she had been going out with his brother. He found this out when they got in a car crash and his brother died. Happyface’s father was a alcoholic. He and his mother moved away to the town nearby. In that high school, he changed and became “popular”. There, he met a girl, Gretchen, that he really liked. But she didn’t feel the same way. Through Happyface’s high school year, he learns to forgive and to grow as a person. This was a great book to read. It was set up in journal format and the author drew pictures to make it more alive and real. It was an entertaining story and the pictures made me laugh.

Heat By: Mike Lupica

I have read SO many great books that it is hard to say which book is the best. Heat is definitely one of the best books I have ever read!

Heat is about 2 Cuban brothers, who’s father and mother have passed, who are praying that they don’t get caught for living without a parent in the household. Carlos is turning 18 in late September, and as of right now, in August, him and his brother, Michael, have not been caught. Then life for Carlos and Michael starts going down-hill. One day, at Michael’s Little League baseball game, Justin (Justin the Jerk) decides to challenge Michael.  Justin is jealous of Michael’s pitch speed. Michael can throw just under 80mph and no other kid can throw that hard at that age. So, Justin asks Michael, “:How old are you?” Other coaches decide to send a letter of complaint to the Board of Directors who say,”We will not let you play until you show us a birth certificate.” The only Nproblem is… Michael’s father didn’t bring the birth certificate to the United States when they left Cuba.

Seventeen Magazine (June/July 2010)

In the June/July issue of Seventeen magazine, there were tips about finding a great swimsuit for your body, an exclusive interview with Ashley Greene, and tips about staying safe at the beach, such as how far out to swim or not to swim near certain areas. I loved the interview with Ashley Greene. I really love Twilight, so this issue was a great thing to read.
