The Hunger Games By: Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen has been the “man” of the household ever since her father died in a mining accident. Now, it is just her, her mom, and her sister, Primrose. Every year, there is an event called ‘The Hunger Games.’ Two representatives, one boy and one girl, are chosen from each of the 12 districts to partake. Beginning when you are twelve, you get one entry. Then, each year until you are 18, you get another entry. However, if you want a year’s supply of food, you can put another entry in, one for each family member. When Judgement Day comes to decide the representatives, tragedy strikes the Everdeen family. First, Peta Mellmark is chosen from district 12. Then, the girl from district 12 is Primrose Everdeen. Instead of letting her sister die, Katniss steps in for her.

Now, Katniss has to fight 23 other boys and girls until she is the last one standing. But, she falls in love with one particular boy.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

Susie is raped and killed by her neighbor. But no one suspects him because he seems too nice. Susie is telling the story from Heaven, looking over her family. Her parents split up because her father has become so absorbed in finding Susie’s killer that he doesn’t acknowledge anything else. Harvey, the neighbor that killed Susie is never discovered but is killed by an icicle one day when he tries to pick up another girl. This story was different. The details in it really brought it out and made it alive. I have also seen the movie and it was great as well.

The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney

Janie discovers that her face is on the back of a milk carton for missing children, but the name is Jennie. Finally, her “parents” tell her that they are really her grandparents and that they changed their names because their daughter, Janie’s mother, Hannah, was in a cult. Hannah ran away from the cult and they were afraid that the cult would try to take Janie back. The book ends with Janie calling her mother. This story was shocking. Until the end, there was new things being revealed that were unexpected. I haven’t read the second book yet, but I want to.

Nancy Drew The Demon of River Heights

In this book Nancy and her friends are helping some local college students film a movie.  One night the boys go missing in the woods.  Nancy goes looking for them and ends up unraveling a mystery in the local mines.   Although this series is different than the original Nancy Drew books, i still enjoyed it because it’s full of adventure and mystery.

Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult

A baby is found dead on an Amish farm. The baby is Katie’s and she is arrested for murdering her child. Her distant aunt, who’s a lawyer, reluctantly helps Katie fight the charges. Katie is sentenced to electronic monitoring. The book later reveals that Katie’s mom knew that Katie was having a baby and was with her the night the baby was born. It is never clearly revealed who killed the baby. I have been a big fan of Jodi Picoult ever since I read her first book, my sister’s keeper. She has a way of keeping the reader focused and not drift away from the story. Even though her books are all really long, they are worth reading the whole way through.

Heat By: Mike Lupica

I have read SO many great books that it is hard to say which book is the best. Heat is definitely one of the best books I have ever read!

Heat is about 2 Cuban brothers, who’s father and mother have passed, who are praying that they don’t get caught for living without a parent in the household. Carlos is turning 18 in late September, and as of right now, in August, him and his brother, Michael, have not been caught. Then life for Carlos and Michael starts going down-hill. One day, at Michael’s Little League baseball game, Justin (Justin the Jerk) decides to challenge Michael.  Justin is jealous of Michael’s pitch speed. Michael can throw just under 80mph and no other kid can throw that hard at that age. So, Justin asks Michael, “:How old are you?” Other coaches decide to send a letter of complaint to the Board of Directors who say,”We will not let you play until you show us a birth certificate.” The only Nproblem is… Michael’s father didn’t bring the birth certificate to the United States when they left Cuba.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

Gemma has the secret of going into another dimension. Along with her friends, Felicity, Ann, and Pippa, they enter the dimension and realize that they can have anything they want there. But they are warned that they should not bring that magic back to Earth because evil forces will try to do bad and then something terrible will happen. The first book in the trilogy leaves off with Pippa being trapped in the dimension because a monster appeared and Gemma did not have time to save Pippa; only Felicity and Ann. This is a great fantasy read. The suspense in the book was thrilling and the plot is interesting. It is sometimes hard to understand what is going on because of the many names and visions told in the book. It takes a while to get into the story and what is happening, but when you do it’s a fun adventure.
