Evening Book Discussion

Monday, July 7th
6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM

Contact: Melissa Chiavaroli   (401) 333-2552, x 2   reference@cumberlandlibrary.org

July’s book discussion choice is Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart tells two intertwining stories, both centering on Okonkwo, a “strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo’s fall from grace with the tribal world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo’s world with the arrival of aggressive European missionaries. These perfectly harmonized twin dramas are informed by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul.

Evening Book Discussion choices are available at the Circulation Desk.

Hampstead Stage Company Presents Alice in Wonderland

Tuesday July 8, 2014
2:00 PM  -  2:45 PM

Contact: Children’s Room   333-2552, x3   read@cumberlandlibrary.org

Lewis Carroll’s immortal classic, Alice in Wonderland, is a wonderful tale of a young girl whose boredom takes her on a journey of imagination. Through Alice’s travels, everyday things become extraordinary. The words on the page come alive as she recites The Jabberwocky and learns how to overcome her own fears. Through this story, we hope to encourage children to enjoy using their imagination, triumph over their fears, and find magical things right in their own backyard.

This 45 minute program is part of the 2014 Summer Reading Program “Fizz, Boom, Read”.   The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is supported by the RI Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes RI Children’s and Young Adult Librarians, and the Friends of the Cumberland Public Library.

This exciting program is for children ages 4-12.  Tickets will be available in the Children’s Room starting Monday, June 30, 2014 and a nominal fee of $0.50 will be charged for individual admission.
