The Cumberland Library Children’s Department hosts a “Family Gardening Club” at the Franklin Farm
Cumberland Library Children’s Room builds a community of summer gardeners
with The Family Gardening Club at The Franklin Farm, as part of the “Dig Into Reading,”a Love Our Earth thematic Summer Reading Program.
Family Gardening Club is being offered for those who are interested in volunteering within the Franklin Farm Community Garden this summer.
Children ages 3 and up, along with their caregivers are welcome to participate.
Volunteers in this program handle all phases of the one-acre vegetable garden from planning and planting, to maintaining, harvesting and delivering produce to the RI Community Food Bank.
During the height of production, surplus produce is offered to local residents on an old fashioned, honor system farm stand. This stand helps the garden to work towards sustainability. From 2006- 2012, the garden produced nearly 124,000 pounds of produce for those in need in RI. Volunteers have given 40,000 hours of their time.
Library participants are invited to “drop by” and volunteer on Monday evenings from 5:30pm till dusk, beginning Monday, July 8th through Monday, August 5th.
Upon each visit, library friends are asked to register with Miss Debra on the Story Blanket at the farm, located at 142 Abbott Run Valley Rd. in Cumberland RI.
Drop by, volunteer with other library and community friends and enjoy the summer sunshine at this fantastic farm!
