“Dig into Reading” The 2013 Summer Reading Program at the Cumberland Public Library
The Cumberland Public Library Children’s Room presents “Dig Into Reading,”a Love Our Earth thematic Summer Reading Program with a registration date beginning Saturday, June 22, 2013. Children of preschool age through sixth grade are invited to join us as we uncover a world of books, attend fabulous storytimes, live performances and outdoor programs, and create unique crafts and more. The Children’s Room will be filled with live plants, gardening tools, gnomes, interactive flannel boards, a “Story Garden” book reporting station and a donation station for giving to the Arbor Day Foundation.
Most activities are free and open to the public all summer long!
For the reading portion of the program, the children are asked to sign an Underground Reading Contractto participate, read and complete literacy activities. The reading portion of the program runs from Monday, July 1 through Friday, August 9, 2013. Children who have completed their reading logs by Friday, August 9, 2013 will be able to pick up their reading certificate and prizes during our Reading Certificate Open House, which will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013.
Keep your children reading this summer and uncover a wonderful awareness of our earth, plants, growth, recycling and all the library has to offer! Registration for this fabulous program begins June 22, 2013 in the Children’s Room.
The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative Grant is sponsoring a summer collaboration between the Cumberland Library Children’s Room, The Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland/Lincoln, OCYL and the Cumberland School Department. The goal of this program is to improve summer opportunities in order to hinder summer learning loss, decrease the academic achievement gap, and help ensure a brighter future for children and youth throughout Rhode Island. A portion of the Cumberland Library Summer Reading Program will be integrated into the Boys and Girls Club summer camp curriculum.
The statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the RI Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank and Pepsi. Local support includes RI Children’s and Young Adult Librarians and the Cumberland Library Friends Group.
