RI Philharmonic Music School

The Rhode Island Philharmonic & Music School will be at the Cumberland Public Library on Monday, July 12, 2010 for two programs: at 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Workshop leader Greg Takemoto will be doing an interactive workshop where children can learn about the three different types of woodwind instruments, the non reed instruments like the recorder and the flute, the single reed instruments like the clarinet and saxophone, and the double reed instruments like the oboe and the bassoon. Each instrument will be demonstrated and described and children will have the chance to try them out. This 30 minute program is part of the 2010 Summer Reading Program “Make a Splash READ!” Funding and support for the statewide Rhode Island Summer Reading Program includes a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services through the RI Office of Library and Information Services, McDonald’s Local Owner/Operators of Rhode Island with local support including the Friends of the Cumberland Public Library.

This exciting program is for children ages 4-12. Tickets will be available in the Children’s Room starting Saturday, July 3, 2010 and a nominal fee of $0.50 will be charged for individual admission.

Blackstone Writer’s Workshop

This group is for writers:
* who have writer’s block
* who are looking to test their creative limits
* who are just beginning
* who have an eye towards publication
* who stopped writing, but want to start again and
* who are willing to share their work with up to 9 other writers.

We will also discuss handouts of published work. All genres are welcome, but the workshop leader has the most experience with poetry.

Michael Turner has a MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University-Newark. His poems appear in Barrelhouse and he is an editor of Growler, an online publication, which reviews first books of poetry and fiction, where his reviews also appear.

Wii Splash Jr.

The Childrens’ Room of the Cumberland Library invites children ages 4-6 to play and explore the undersea world of the Wii game “Endless Ocean”. Players will swim through coral reefs, explore ancient shipwrecks, discover and interact with sealife and search for sunken treasure. All ages. All Wii skill levels. This special event will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 10:00–11:00 a.m.

Registration begins June 26, 2010 in the Children’s Room. Space is limited. Please bring your library card with you when registering. Preference will be given to children who reside in Cumberland.

Open Art Program

The Children’s Room of the Cumberland Public Library invites all budding artists to join us for our Ocean of Fun Open Art program. This is a drop-in art program for children ages 4-10 and requires no registration. The first of four Summer Open Art programs will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The children are invited to choose one craft project to complete. Participation in the Open Art program is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents/guardians are asked to stay with their child in the Children’s Program Room. Donations are greatly appreciated to help defray the cost of materials. Please note: For time management purposes, there is no admittance 15 minutes prior to the close of the program.

Family Book Circle

The Childrens’ Room at the Cumberland Library invites children ages 3-6, with their caregivers, to share their favorite picture books, creative literacy artwork or stuffed “book related” friend with other participants (outside in the Gazebo!) Award winning books and Miss Debra’s favorite books and characters will be discussed.

This program will be held on Friday, July 9th from 10:00-10:45am. Registration begins July 3, 2010 in the Children’s Room. Please bring your library card when registering. Preference will be given to children who reside in Cumberland.

Storytime Under the Trees

Storytime Under the Trees is for children ages 3-6. This storytime will be held on Wednesdays, June 30 through August 4 at 9:30 a.m. Storytime is comprised of 30 minutes of thematic stories, fingerplays, and music. Please gather at the gazebo behind the library.

In case of inclement weather, storytime will be held inside the library.

All 2010 summer storytimes are Drop-In format. No registration is required.

Tell Me A Story

The Children’s Room will be offering a unique storytime for children ages 3-6. Tell Me a Story will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:00 p.m., June 29th -August 3rd. Each week we will host a special guest reader from the area schools who will share some of their favorite stories with the children. Tell Me a Story takes place in the Children’s Program Room.
