Mural, Mural on the Wall

 The Cumberland Public Library is inviting young artists, ages 8-12, to participate in the Mural Mural on the Wall Program. Participants will work together to paint images of ocean life onto large pieces of fabric. This painting program will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Registration begins on Saturday, May 29, 2010. The completed mural will be on display in the Children’s Program Room during the 2010 summer reading program: Make a Splash Read! Space is limited. Children should wear appropriate clothing for painting. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of materials. Please bring your library card with you when registering. Preference will be given to children who reside in Cumberland.

Texas Hold ‘Em

This two part workshop, Texas Hold ‘Em will be held over 2 Thursday evenings: May 27 & June 3, 2010 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Diane Ellis has been playing Texas Hold ’Em style poker for eight years and has won many tournaments. In this two session workshop, Diane will teach the basics of the game and strategies for winning. No previous experience is required.
NOTE: This is not a poker tournament and there will be no gambling, it is a poker lesson.

Intro to Computers

Wednesday, May 26th  / 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.

Learn some of the basics of computing and the Internet during this three-week course. These hands-on lessons will last for approximately 1 ½ hours each and include; Computer Basics, Internet, Searching the Web, and Q&A.
The course will begin on Wednesday, May 26th at 10:00 a.m. and continue on Wednesdays, June 2nd and 9th.  The course is limited to 10 persons.

Meet the Artist/Watercolor Demonstration

Saturday, May 22nd / 3:00  - 5:00 p.m.

All ages are invited to attend a free demonstration of the creation of a Watercolor Painting from start to finish by Germaine Gerie Krobath. It will be held in the Hayden Center (Room 3) from 3:00 - 5:00pm.

From 2:00 - 5:00pm come “Meet the Artists:” Germaine and her students. Artwork by children and adults from a variety of classes including watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed media will be on display.

You are also welcome to view the exhibit during the month of May and June during the Book Store hours: Thursdays from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Come and play some of your favorite Wii and Playstation 2 games on our BIG SCREEN!

Games include: Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Guitar Hero III, MarioKart, Dance Dance Revolution, and SingStar. Other non-electronic games, such as Magic the Gathering cards, Uno, etc… will be available too.

The games and equipment were generously donated by the Friends of the Cumberland Public Library.

Blackstone Writer’s Workshop

Saturday, May 8th / 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.

This group is for writers:

* who have writer’s block
* who are looking to test their creative limits
* who are just beginning
* who have an eye towards publication
* who stopped writing, but want to start again and
* who are willing to share their work with up to 9 other writers.

We will also discuss handouts of published work. All genres are welcome, but the workshop leader has the most experience with poetry. More workshops will be held on the 2nd Saturday of the month in June and July (June 12th and July 10th).

Michael Turner has a MFA in Creative Writing from Rutgers University-Newark. His poems appear in Barrelhouse and he is an editor of Growler, an online publication, which reviews first books of poetry and fiction, where his reviews also appear.

Anyone from teen to senior citizen is invited to come play chess on Thursday afternoons at the library. Beginners will receive instruction from seasoned players. Advanced players can challenge each other or teach newcomers.
