Learn to Paint in Acrylic or Oil

Cumberland Public Library will host a four-session Learn Acrylic or Oil Painting  class over four Friday afternoons: January 8, 15, 22 & 29, 2010 from Noon-2:30 PM.

Students will have the choice of working with Acrylic or Oil paints. Germaine Gerie will demonstrate all aspects of painting. Students will learn composition, color theory, depth and perspective. A variety of painting techniques will be taught.

Beginning and intermediate artists are welcome to join. Students will value the principles and techniques taught to achieve realistic results in their paintings. Technique is taught - style is a personal development. Germaine encourages individual style.

**Students using oil paint will not be permitted to use turpentine in the classroom. An odorless Turpenoid must be used instead, or a water based oil paint.

Germaine Gerie, a professional artist and a graduate in art education from SUNY at New Paltz, has been teaching privately since 1981. She is an accomplished artist in a variety of media, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, ink and pastels. Her style ranges from very detailed renderings to pieces with the simplest line but greatest understanding of form and beauty.

Stretch, Relax & Learn

In these four Friday morning classes: January 8, 15, 22 & 29, 2010, you will stretch the major muscle groups of your body and learn relaxation and breathing techniques to relieve stress. You will also learn how to exercise safely, for your body and life. Basic nutrition and a healthy lifestyle will be discussed.

Please bring a towel or mat for lying on the floor, drinking water and any questions you have. Dress in lightweight, comfortable layered clothing that allows your body to move and “breathe.” When finished with this class you will feel good - maybe even great!

Fee: $5/class, payable in advance upon in-person registration. Maximum: 40.

Thursday Afternoon Chess

Anyone from teen to senior citizen is invited to come play chess on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 - 3:00 at the library. Beginners will receive instruction from seasoned players. Advanced players can challenge each other or teach newcomers.

Painting with Watercolor or Acrylics

This four class session will be held on 4 Wednesday evenings: January 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2010. Students will work from a still life, or photos, to create drawings and paintings using acrylic or watercolor paints. All aspects of painting including composition, color theory, depth, perspective and a variety of techniques will be taught. Germaine will show you how to achieve realistic results yet encourages individual style.

All artistic levels are welcome to join. If you have never picked up a paintbrush before, you will be amazed at the results!

Fee: $15/class, payable upon registration (materials not included).

Two Year Old Storytime Registration

The Two-Year-Old Storytime will be held on Thursdays, 9:30-10:00 a.m. and 10:30-11:00 a.m., January 14 - February 11, 2010. The children will enjoy 30 minutes of thematic stories, fingerplays, music and a craft. A familiar adult who is willing to participate must accompany the child. Registration will be held in the Children’s Room, beginning Wednesday, January 6 and ending on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Please be sure to bring your library card when registering. Preference will be given to children who reside in Cumberland.

Lapsit Storytime Registration

Mural, Mural on the Wall

The Cumberland Public Library is inviting young artists, ages 8-12, to participate in Mural, Mural on the Wall. Participants will design and paint a colorful quilt square on a fabric mural inspired by the books The Quiltmaker’s Gift and The Quiltmaker’s Journey by Jeff Brumbeau. This mural program will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Registration begins on Saturday December 19, 2009. The completed mural will be on display in the Children’s Program Room for the winter months. Space is limited. Children should wear appropriate clothing for making art. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of materials. Please bring your library card with you when registering. Preference will be given to children who reside in Cumberland.

Showtime - Santa Buddies

December’s Showtime feature will be shown on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. The irresistible puppies are back in a heartwarming holiday adventure. Take a fantastic journey with your beloved Buddy friends to the magical world of the North Pole in this wonderfully wacky twist on a classic Christmas favorite. This program is for children ages 4-12 and their families. A limited number of FREE tickets will be available in the Children’s Room beginning December 21, 2009. Parents and/or guardians are asked to remain in the Children’s Program Room with their child for the duration of the movie. Free popcorn will be served and families may bring in a beverage in a closed container, such as a juice box. No open drinks will be allowed. Families may bring a soft cushion to sit on.
